Abstract

The United Kingdom has 11 Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) centres, which have a total of approximately 460 beds for the rehabilitation of people with a spinal injury; the first UK SCI centre opened in Stoke Mandeville in 1944. SCI is an injury to the spinal cord from traumatic or non‐traumatic causes. The prevalence of undernutrition is common amongst people with spinal cord injury (PWSCI). Initially, after injury, the proposed dietetic outcome would typically be to minimise nutritional losses. Later on, for those who have lost weight during the immediate post‐injury period, weight regain and optimising muscle mass restoration are a priority so that they are able to derive maximum benefit from physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions. More research is needed into dietary supplements and restrictions that could improve the neurological and functional recovery of PWSCI.
