Abstract
Globally, more than 50 million people annually sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI). In the intensive care unit, the majority of TBI patients will be sedated and ventilated; this chapter describes dietetic interventions using the ABCDEF format, as per the British Dietetic Association Model and Process. TBIs are known as the silent epidemic, leading to death and both physical and cognitive disabilities. Providing basal requirements by day 5 post‐injury has been shown to promote better outcomes, though there is still much research required. Anthropometry, biochemistry and tolerance to feeding should be monitored closely to ensure patient‐focused goals are being achieved, where possible. In the early days post‐trauma, these goals may change rapidly, and dietitians should respond in a timely manner to ensure appropriate adjustment to nutritional needs throughout the acute phase, putting patients in the best place prior to rehabilitation.
