Abstract

Mental illness can have a profound impact on someone's daily functioning, employment or education, relationships and overall quality of life. Individuals with mental health conditions can present with a range of nutritional risks, including overweight/obesity, undernutrition, disordered eating, constipation and/or polydipsia. ‘Formulation’ is often used in mental health services. Nutritional screening is essential within mental health services to enable early identification of nutritional need in a population with increased nutritional vulnerability. This chapter offers an overview of components that may be included within a dietetic assessment in mental health. It introduces mental health conditions commonly supported by dietitians working in mental health. Dietary intervention included general principles of balanced eating and/or meal planning and goal setting. A 2020 systematic review identified seven studies, each reporting positive effects of prebiotics and/or probiotics in the treatment of adult depression.
