Abstract

This chapter covers key rare neurological conditions that dietitians may be involved in treating. These conditions include: Guillain–Barré syndrome, Duchenne muscular dystrophy in adults, myasthenia gravis, and Huntington's disease. Guillain–Barré syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body's cells attack the nervous system. Nutritional intake can be oral, enteral and even parental in the case of an ileus. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most severe form of muscular dystrophy and the second‐most common hereditary genetic disorder. Patients with myasthenia gravis experience varying degrees of dysphagia due to muscle weakness and fatigue; they will require nutrition support with altered consistencies and textures as the condition fluctuates in relapse and remission and may require enteral nutrition support as a temporary measure. The chapter also presents the assessment, diagnosis, intervention, implementation, monitor and review, and evaluation of these conditions.
