Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) includes three main conditions: coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and peripheral vascular disease. Worldwide, CVDs are the leading cause of death. Globally, high blood pressure (BP) is the leading risk factor for CVD. It is estimated that up to 80% of CVD is preventable with healthy diet, physical activity, avoiding tobacco and harmful use of alcohol as part of a prevention strategy, which also includes meeting therapeutic targets for BP, lipids and glucose. CHD is the most common form of CVD. CHD can present in a number of ways: stable angina, acute coronary syndrome, and sudden death. The chapter also describes the medical management of CVD; a focus on CHD, hypertension and dyslipidaemia. Cardiovascular rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary intervention with a class I level A recommendation for patients who have had anatherosclerotic cardiovascular disease event and/or revascularisation, and for patients with heart failure to improve patient outcomes.
