Abstract

In addition to type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes, there are also a vast array of other types or forms of diabetes. Other types of diabetes are those that are neither type 1 nor type 2. They are maturity‐onset diabetes of the young, monogenic diabetes, type 3c diabetes, steroid‐induced hyperglycaemia and so on. Lipodystrophies are a very rare group of conditions where the amount/or distribution of subcutaneous adipose tissue is abnormal. The evidence base for the dietary management of patients with lipodystrophy is sparse due to the rarity of this condition. Insulin receptor mutations are a rare cause of severe insulin resistance. It is important to ensure that rare forms of diabetes are considered and diagnosed genetically when applicable to ensure that the correct treatment is given and research can be progressed.
