Abstract

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the degree of glucose intolerance with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. Consequently, this encompasses a broad range of hyperglycaemia from mild impaired glucose intolerance or impaired fasting glucose to glucose levels characteristic of overt diabetes. GDM is a common complication during pregnancy and is therefore a global health problem. GDM is associated with a higher incidence of adverse foetal outcomes with an increased risk of large for gestational age, shoulder dystocia and neonatal hypoglycaemia. Self‐monitoring of blood glucose levels before and after meals is a key part of the management of GDM. The frequency and type of blood glucose testing may vary between patients and countries. First‐line treatment in GDM requires dietary and lifestyle modifications, which combine guidance used to support people living with diabetes and also consideration of nutritional requirements required during a pregnancy.
