Abstract

Obesity treatment aims to improve health and quality of life through sustained reduction in body weight. Lifestyle interventions are the first line of treatment for people living with obesity and achieve an average weight loss of 5–10%. Obesity management medications (OMMs) have been used in obesity management for decades. The dietitian's role is evolving with new knowledge of obesity pathogenesis and highly effective OMMs, including with respect to optimal dietary advice. The assessment of anthropometry should follow the guidance for people living with obesity. Laboratory investigations are typically completed by the multidisciplinary team as part of the obesity assessment prior to commencing obesity pharmacotherapy. Current OMMs include orlistat, phentermine‐topiramate, naltrexone‐bupropion, liraglutide, semaglutide and tirzepatide. OMMs should be used as an adjunct to diet, physical activity and behavioural approaches.
