Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterised by abnormal kidney function or structure. This chapter details dietetic management within CKD groupings, including early stage, more advanced stages, conservative management and patients receiving renal replacement therapies. It describes the dietary interventions that are common in CKD, such as dietary potassium, phosphate, fluid, salt, protein and energy management. The chapter also presents a list of common causes of CKD. Conservative management or conservative treatment is the management of advanced kidney disease without renal replacement therapy. Diabetes is the most common cause of kidney disease globally and diabetes‐related CKD a leading cause of people reaching kidney failure. Hypertension is both a leading cause and consequence of kidney disease. Obesity is independently associated with both the development and progression of CKD, including stage 5 CKD and kidney failure.
