Abstract

Malabsorption can occur for several different reasons and due to different conditions. It is important to distinguish between malabsorption (impaired nutrient uptake/transport through the mucosal layer) and maldigestion (impaired breakdown of macronutrients, e.g. enzymatic). As well as energy loss, one of the key nutritional considerations with fat malabsorption or maldigestion is the loss of fat‐soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). The goals of dietary treatment include: treating the primary disorder, restoring nutritional status, and providing symptom relief. Specific dietary treatments for differing types of malabsorption are listed. A multimodal approach is essential. In some malabsorptive autoimmune conditions, medications are required to heal the mucosal membrane and prevent malabsorption. The timescale for monitoring and reviewing, as well as evaluation of treatment protocol, will vary based on the diagnosis and severity of the individual condition.
