Abstract
Dietetic care for liver and biliary conditions is a huge area of practice, and this chapter covers a wide range of liver conditions. It is broadly organised according to the Nutrition and Dietetic Care Process with reference to specific conditions. Acute liver failure, also known as fulminant liver failure, is rare and presents as acute abnormal liver blood tests without underlying chronic liver disease. Alcohol‐related liver disease problems are a major public health concern in many. Specific aetiology steatotic liver disease includes Wilson's disease, haemochromatosis, alpha‐1‐antitrypsin deficiency, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, autoimmune hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and primary biliary cholangitis. Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common type of primary cancer, accounting for 80% of liver cancers. The chapter also looks at the dietetic diagnosis of liver disease, namely the nutritional consequences patients will face because of liver disease.
