Abstract

Disorders of the upper gastrointestinal (UGI) tract can lead to an increased risk of undernutrition, inadequate dietary intake and nutritional deficiencies. This may be linked to inflammation and pain when eating and swallowing food, or in oesophageal obstructions or leaks, oral intake may be unsafe. This chapter discusses several benign disorders of the UGI tract and their nutritional management. These conditions can be grouped together into oral diseases, inflammatory, motility or obstructive disorders and oesophageal injury. Oral diseases include oro‐dental and jaw trauma, micronutrient deficiencies; Inflammatory disorders include oesophagitis, Barrett's oesophagus; Motility disorders include oesophageal spasms, oesophageal achalasia, oesophageal obstruction; Oesophageal injury includes oesophageal fistulas, oesophageal perforation and oesophagostomy. Texture modification can be used in the management of dysmotility and partial UGI obstructions such as strictures. Food fortification is commonly required in the management of UGI disorders to support an inadequate dietary intake, dietary restriction or texture‐modified diet.
