Abstract

Ageing is a natural process affecting many body systems. Healthcare strategy in the United Kingdom has a long‐standing commitment to support older adults to age well and live independently for longer. Good nutrition is vital to achieving these goals. In the United Kingdom, the National Diet and Nutrition Survey, NDNS reported the some intake information for older adults. The most recent Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition, SACN report identified large gaps in the evidence base for older adults in many areas relating to nutrition, and ultimately concluded that there was insufficient evidence to make specific dietary recommendations for older people that differ from those for the rest of the adult population. Enjoyment of eating was recognised as a core aspect of healthy eating, as the emotional and social aspects of food and the role that food and drink play in life's events should not be underestimated.
