Abstract
The cardioprotective diet is the first line of dietary advice in protection against cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the management of metabolic syndrome. Guidelines on the management of CVD, including dietary management, have been published nationally and internationally by societies and institutions specialising in cardiology. Dietary components include saturated fats, trans fatty acids, omega‐3 fatty acids, fruit and vegetables, dietary fibre, carbohydrates and free sugars and so on. Diet patterns include the Mediterranean diet; and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, DASH diet. To measure adherence to the Mediterranean diet, the Mediterranean score tool can be used to assess current eating habits and identify areas for improvement. In preventative practice, assigning a nutrition and dietetic diagnosis using the Problem, Aetiology, Sign and Symptoms (PAS) method can be challenging. PAS statements should be based on specific nutritional problems and on diet history and adherence to prevention guidelines.
