Abstract

Infants and children with common gastroenterology disorders are often referred by a general practitioner to a paediatric dietitian for reasons including reflux, toddler diarrhoea, transient lactose intolerance and coeliac disease. Children suspected of inflammatory bowel disease will be referred to a tertiary centre gastroenterologist to confirm diagnosis, and dietetic management will be required thereafter. Gastro‐oesophageal reflux is common in infants; it usually gets better by itself by the time the infant is one year of age. Toddlers have variable stool patterns according to their dietary intake, but persistent diarrhoea or constipation can initiate a dietetic referral. Constipation is common in children and is a frequent reason for referral to secondary care. There is growing interest in the role of diet and the management of patients with Crohn's disease, with research being carried out worldwide looking at different dietary strategies and their efficacy.
