Abstract

This chapter examines the inequalities and challenges underpinning food security and vulnerability. It introduces the concept of inclusion health, the umbrella term used to describe people who are socially excluded, who typically experience multiple risk factors for poor health, including poverty. To highlight this, the nutritional factors impacting people experiencing homelessness are discussed. The impact of low income, food prices and balancing household budgets can have a detrimental effect on nutritional intakes. Food insecurity compromises someone's ability to follow dietary recommendations for dietary management, as they often skip more meals, eat less fruit and vegetables and consume more energy‐dense, high salt foods. Currently, there are no standardised methods of screening for food insecurity in dietetic practice, and no for mal methods of referral to local food aid support are available.
