Abstract
The British Dietetic Association (BDA) commissioned research to inform the development of a workforce strategy for dietetics. Enhanced practice is a level of practice undertaken by graduate dietitians who have moved beyond novice competency. Dietitians at this level would demonstrate competencies appropriate for traditional speciality dietetic roles. Advanced practice (AP) or advanced clinical practice is an essential workforce strategy led by National Health Service England. AP can achieve consultant‐level practice where appropriate capabilities are met. Dietitians can undertake supplementary prescribing duties if a Health and Care Professions Council‐approved course has been completed. Whilst independent prescribing is not mandatory for advanced and first‐contact roles, these are often required to compete for these roles, which may be open to a range of professions. The BDA are campaigning for a change in the legislation to establish independent prescribing rights for dietitians.
