Autonomism and Social Movements (Latin America)

<jats:p> The term “autonomy” ( <jats:italic>autonomía</jats:italic> (Spanish), <jats:italic>autonomia</jats:italic> (Portuguese)) has been intensely present in the discourse of the Latin American social struggles of the last three decades. However, the sociopolitical landscape around “autonomism” is very heterogeneous. Although “autonomy” has become a central notion for several social movements in Latin America (and elsewhere, particularly in Europe), the meanings attributed to it are still disparate. </jats:p>
