Abstract
<jats:p>The monograph is a comprehensive author's study of criminal punishment as a socio-legal phenomenon and its goals. The author examines the legal, criminological, social and philosophical aspects of the scientific problem under study. The material is based on traditional views on the phenomena under study, however, acting only as a starting point for research that raises both old and new questions and comes to new author's solutions. In particular, based on the study of the legal nature, social conditionality, and achievability of punishment goals, the problems of their compliance with prevailing modern scientific views and, as a result, modern Russian criminal policy and its development trends have been identified. The article analyzes not only the current state and problems of the institution of punishment and its goals, but also the prospects for their development, taking into account related forms of response to crime — the system of prevention and measures of rehabilitation, including the probation system.
